The Exposure Triangle
The brightness (exposure) of a photograph is determined by three interrelated parameters that form a set of trade-offs, commonly called the "exposure triangle".

Adjusting any one parameter usually requires an opposite adjustment of the others to keep the same exposure. For example, increasing shutter speed (less light) can be compensated by opening the aperture or raising ISO.
Shooting Modes (PASM)
Mainstream cameras offer a set of standard shooting modes that control how much of the exposure the camera decides automatically.

ISO can be set to automatic or manual in any mode. These modes are an industry standard, though letter labels differ slightly across brands (e.g. Canon uses Av/Tv, while Nikon and Sony use A/S).
Metering and Exposure Compensation
- Metering: the camera estimates exposure from scene brightness. Common modes include evaluative/matrix metering, center-weighted metering, and spot metering.
- Exposure Compensation (EV): in automatic or semi-automatic modes, an overall adjustment that brightens or darkens the camera's metered exposure.
- Histogram: a graph of the distribution of pixels from dark to bright, used to judge under- or over-exposure; clipping on the right indicates blown highlights, and clipping on the left indicates crushed shadows.
White Balance
White balance corrects for the color temperature of different light sources so that white objects appear white rather than tinted yellow or blue. Color temperature is measured in kelvin (K); lower values are warmer (orange) and higher values are cooler (blue).
Common white-balance presets include auto (AWB), daylight, cloudy, shade, incandescent (tungsten), and fluorescent. Setting the temperature manually or using a gray card yields more precise results.
Focal Length and Angle of View
- Focal length (mm): determines the angle of view and magnification. Shorter focal lengths give a wider view; longer focal lengths give a narrower view with stronger compression.
- Wide-angle (e.g. 16β35mm): a broad view, often used for landscapes and architecture.
- Standard (around 50mm): a view close to the human eye with little distortion.
- Telephoto (e.g. 70β200mm and beyond): a narrow view that compresses near and far, often used for portraits, wildlife, and sports.
