Photography Basics: Exposure, Shooting Modes, and Terms

A primer for a general audience: the exposure triangle, PASM shooting modes, metering, white balance, focal length, and common photographic terms.

This article covers general camera fundamentals and standard industry terminology. It describes mechanisms and definitions, and contains no personalized shooting presets or stylistic preferences.

The Exposure Triangle

The brightness (exposure) of a photograph is determined by three interrelated parameters that form a set of trade-offs, commonly called the "exposure triangle".

Adjusting any one parameter usually requires an opposite adjustment of the others to keep the same exposure. For example, increasing shutter speed (less light) can be compensated by opening the aperture or raising ISO.

Shooting Modes (PASM)

Mainstream cameras offer a set of standard shooting modes that control how much of the exposure the camera decides automatically.

M (Manual)Aperture and shutter speed are set manually; exposure is fully controlled by the photographer.
A / Av (Aperture Priority)The photographer sets the aperture and the camera matches the shutter speed. Often used to control depth of field.
S / Tv (Shutter Priority)The photographer sets the shutter speed and the camera matches the aperture. Often used to freeze or blur motion.
P (Program)The camera sets both aperture and shutter speed; the photographer can still adjust ISO, white balance, and so on.

ISO can be set to automatic or manual in any mode. These modes are an industry standard, though letter labels differ slightly across brands (e.g. Canon uses Av/Tv, while Nikon and Sony use A/S).

Metering and Exposure Compensation

White Balance

White balance corrects for the color temperature of different light sources so that white objects appear white rather than tinted yellow or blue. Color temperature is measured in kelvin (K); lower values are warmer (orange) and higher values are cooler (blue).

Common white-balance presets include auto (AWB), daylight, cloudy, shade, incandescent (tungsten), and fluorescent. Setting the temperature manually or using a gray card yields more precise results.

Focal Length and Angle of View

VignetteDarkening of the corners relative to the center; it can result from lens characteristics or be added deliberately in editing.
IncandescentA warm artificial light source with a low color temperature, which tends to give images an orange cast.
Dynamic RangeThe range of brightest to darkest detail a sensor can record simultaneously.
Image StabilizationCompensation for shake via the lens or body; usually turned off for long exposures on a tripod.
RAWA file format containing the sensor's raw data, preserving more latitude for later editing.
